Legend of the game: Millie Bright retires from football aged 32

Millie Bright has announced her retirement from football with immediate effect.

The Chelsea captain has called time on her playing career at the age of 32, bringing down the curtain on one of the most decorated careers in modern English football. Bright confirmed her decision this week, saying she is “ready to say goodbye to playing football”.

It is a huge moment for Chelsea. Bright joined the club from Doncaster Belles ahead of the 2015 season and went on to become one of the defining players of the Blues’ modern era. Across 12 years in west London, she became Chelsea’s longest-serving player, record appearance maker and one of the central figures in the club’s rise into a domestic powerhouse.

Twelve years, 20 trophies, one Chelsea legend

During her time at Chelsea, Bright made 314 appearances, scored 19 goals and won 20 trophies. Yes, 20.

That haul includes eight Women’s Super League titles, six FA Cups, four League Cups and two Community Shields. She was part of every WSL-winning Chelsea side to date and helped the club complete domestic trebles in both 2021 and 2025.

Her England career only added to the legacy. Bright won 88 caps for the Lionesses during a nine-year international career, helped England win Euro 2022 at Wembley and captained the team to the 2023 World Cup final. She later stepped away from international football in 2025, having already secured her place as one of the most important defenders England has produced.

A leader on and off the pitch

Bright was also recognised beyond the pitch. She received an OBE in the 2024 New Year Honours for services to football, a reflection of her role in a generation that helped push the women’s game further into the mainstream.

The final years of her career were not easy. Bright has spoken openly about the physical and mental toll of elite football, including injury, pressure and online abuse. Her retirement feels less like a sudden ending and more like a player recognising she had given everything she could.

Chelsea have confirmed she will remain connected to the club off the pitch, continuing her work through the Chelsea Foundation. She will also take on a new role as club ambassador.

A Chelsea legend

For Chelsea, this is more than the loss of a captain. It is the end of a chapter shaped by one of the club’s great ambassadors. Players came and went. Managers changed. The women’s game grew beyond recognition. Millie Bright was there through all of it.

A Chelsea legend. An England great. And one of the players who helped drag the women’s game into a new era.
