End of an Era: Beth Mead Confirms Arsenal Exit After Nine Years

Beth Mead is leaving Arsenal. And yes, it very much feels like the end of an era.

The England forward will depart when her contract expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, bringing down the curtain on nine years in north London. Arsenal confirmed the news this week, with Mead saying in an emotional farewell that leaving the club “breaks my heart”.

It is a major exit for Arsenal. Mead joined the Gunners from Sunderland in 2017 and became one of the defining players of the club’s modern era. During her time in north London, she scored 86 goals in 263 appearances, helping Arsenal win the Women’s Super League, the Women’s Champions League, the FIFA Champions Cup and three League Cups.

During her nine years at Arsenal, Mead became one of the club’s most recognisable players and a defining face of the modern women’s game. She was part of a generation that helped push women’s football further into the mainstream.

Clare Wheatley, Arsenal’s director of women’s football, called her “a legend of the club” and said she would go down as one of Arsenal’s best forwards.

From Sunderland star to Arsenal icon

Mead’s rise started long before the Emirates crowds and Lionesses spotlight. Born in Whitby, she came through at Middlesbrough’s centre of excellence before making her senior breakthrough at Sunderland.

In five seasons with the Black Cats, her goalscoring quickly made her one of the brightest attacking talents in English football. She scored 89 goals in 109 appearances for Sunderland, helping take the club from the National League to the WSL and picking up a Women’s National League Cup along the way.

Arsenal brought her south in 2017, where she grew into one of the WSL’s most iconic forwards.

Her England career only added to the legacy. Mead was the star of Euro 2022, winning the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament as the Lionesses claimed their first major trophy. She was also named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, becoming the first women’s footballer to win the award. She later missed the 2023 World Cup after an ACL injury, but returned to help England retain the European Championship in 2025.

City next?

Now comes the obvious question: where next?

Manchester City have been strongly linked with Mead for some time, with reports suggesting a deal is already close. The move would also reunite her with former Arsenal team-mate and partner Vivianne Miedema, who is already at City.

That would be quite the storyline. One Arsenal great already in Manchester. Another potentially following.

Nothing is official yet, but a City move would make sense on the pitch too. Mead is 31, hugely experienced and still dangerous. With a World Cup on the horizon, regular minutes will matter.

For Arsenal fans, this one will sting. Even more so if she turns up at the Emirates next season in sky blue.

Mead leaves Arsenal with trophies, memories and a proper legacy.

For the WSL, though, this may not be the end of her story. Just the start of a very interesting next chapter.
