WSL2: Magpies March On While Blades Rescue Point in Stoppage-Time Drama

Just two games took place in the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 (WSL2) on Wednesday night. Both had major implications at opposite ends of the table.

Newcastle are now genuine promotion contenders after a 2–0 win over Birmingham. They move to within one point of the top three and sit just two behind the Blues. A crucial clash with Palace awaits this weekend.

Meanwhile, ten-player Sheffield United earned a vital point against Sunderland. A 99th-minute equaliser boosted their fight against relegation.

Newcastle strengthened their promotion push with a 2–0 win over Birmingham. The result moves them to within just two point of Birmingham in second place. Birmingham knew anything less than victory would damage their title hopes.

Both sides came out the traps fast in an evenely match and opening start. But Newcastle took the lead on 42 minutes. Jordan Nobbs fired a superb 25-yard strike into the top corner, her fifth league goal of the season. Birmingham controlled much of the second half but failed to register a shot on target.

Beth Lumsden doubled the lead in the 67th minute with a sublime finish, meeting Emily Murphy’s through ball before lifting it over the goalkeeper to secure all three points for Newcastle.

The result lifts Newcastle into fourth place, extending their unbeaten run to five matches, with just one defeat in their last thirteen league games. Their form keeps them firmly in contention for the promotion places as the season reaches a decisive stage.

For Birmingham City, the defeat represents a missed opportunity to close the gap on Charlton at the top. It is their second loss in five matches, indicating a dip in momentum at a crucial point in the campaign.

Sunderland and Sheffield United shared the points in a dramatic 2–2 draw, with a chaotic stoppage-time finish defining the match.

Sheffield United struck early through Amy Andrews (4’), lifting a delicate chip over Demi Lambourne at the second attempt.

Sunderland dominated thereafter and found a deserved equaliser in the 57th minute, as Katie Kitching fired into the top corner after being picked out by a precise cross from Katy Watson.

Charlie Devlin was dismissed in the 61st minute after receiving a second booking, reducing Sheffield United to ten players.

Sunderland piled on the pressure late on and looked to have won it four minutes into stoppage time, when Eleanor Dale turned home a deep cross from Jessica Brown. However, there was one final twist. Sheffield United were awarded a penalty in the ninth minute of added time after a rash challenge from Libby McKinnes on Sophie O’Rourke, and Amy Andrews converted to rescue a point.

The result could prove crucial for Sheffield United, earning a valuable point in their fight to avoid relegation and extending their run to three consecutive draws. Sunderland, meanwhile, will be frustrated to concede so late after appearing set to secure all three points.
