A brand-new global women’s football tournament is about to shake things up. The World Sevens Football series – or W7F for short – kicks off this May with a fast-paced format, big-name teams, and a seriously impressive $5 million prize fund.
What actually is it?
W7F is a new 7-a-side tournament that brings together eight professional women’s teams for three days of action-packed football. Think high energy, quick matches, and a festival vibe – all designed to showcase skill, speed, and excitement.
And it’s not just a one-off. Tournaments are set to take place at different locations around the world, giving fans everywhere a chance to watch the action live.
The format
- Matches are 15 minutes per half
- Games are played on a pitch half the size of a standard 11-a-side pitch with slightly smaller goals
- Rolling subs from a 14-player matchday squad
- Teams are split into two groups of four
- Top teams go through to the semis and then final
First stop: Portugal
The debut tournament will be held in Estoril, Portugal from 21–23 May 2025. Matches will take place at Estádio António Coimbra da Mota, just 25km outside Lisbon.

Which teams are playing?
Official team announcements are still under wraps, but the tournament is reportedly over subscribed. One thing we do know: Champions League finalists won’t be taking part, as the CL final is happening the day after W7F wraps up – down the road at Sporting Lisbon’s Estádio José Alvalade.
We’re expecting the W7F lineup to be revealed once the Champions League semi-finals are done and dusted.
What is the prize money?
There is a reported to be a total $5m prize fund for the tournament in Portugal, with the winners set to take home $2.5m.
Why now?
