WC 2027: Bronze Marks Milestone as Lionesses See Off Iceland 2-0

England’s Lionesses made it two wins from two in their 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign with a controlled 2–0 victory over Iceland at the City Ground.

Fresh from the emphatic win over Ukraine earlier in the week, Sarina Wiegman made three changes to her starting XI, with Lucy Bronze, Lauren James and Esme Morgan replacing Maya Le Tissier, Laura Blindkilde Brown and Lotte Wubben-Moy.

England started brightly and dominated from the outset, with early chances falling to Alessia Russo, Lauren James and Lauren Hemp.

The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute. Bronze rose highest inside a crowded box to powerfully head home a Lauren James cross. It came on her 145th Lionesses appearance – moving the veteran full-back into third place on England’s all-time appearance list.

England continued to control the game but were unable to extend their lead for much of the afternoon. Iceland rarely threatened, though Hannah Hampton was called into action once, producing a sharp save to deny the visitors from their only shot on target.

The second goal eventually arrived with twelve minutes remaining. Bronze turned provider this time, driving a powerful low cross into the box where Georgia Stanway finished confidently for her third goal in two games.

That strike ended any hopes of an Iceland comeback as England closed out the match comfortably in front of a lively Nottingham crowd.

England’s dominance again underlined their quality against lesser opposition. The Lionesses registered 31 attempts on goal, though converting only twice – something Wiegman will want sharpened ahead of tougher tests to come.

Still, the early signs are encouraging.

Two wins. Eight goals scored. Just one conceded.

With Spain also making a strong start in the group, the race for automatic qualification could ultimately hinge on the meetings between the two sides.

For now, England have done exactly what was required, building early momentum as the road to the 2027 Women’s World Cup continues.
