UWCL Matchday 6 Round-Up: Quarter-Finalists Confirmed as League Phase Ends in Style

Matchday 6 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) brought the league phase to a dramatic close. Nine matches, 27 goals, and a series of decisive moments capped a fiercely contested group-stage campaign.

Barcelona closed out their group with a routine win in Paris to finish top of the table unbeaten. Meanwhile, Lyon delivered a four-goal statement at home to Atlético, securing their place among the favourites heading into the knockouts. Chelsea also booked their quarter-final spot, coming from behind in Wolfsburg to extend their unbeaten run.

Elsewhere, Bayern München did what was required with a dominant home display against Vålerenga, sealing the final automatic qualification place and edging out Arsenal – who eased past Leuven but ultimately fell short. Manchester United finished strong with a narrow win away at Juventus, with both sides progressing as seeded play-off teams.

Further down the table, Real Madrid blew the chance of automatic qualification after a frustrating night at FC Twente. Roma hit six to sign off with pride, while PSG and Benfica ended their campaigns winless after sharing the points in Lisbon.

UWCL 25/26 Roma 6-1 St Polten scoreboard

Roma finished their UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign in emphatic fashion, dismantling fellow strugglers St. Pölten 6–1 to secure their first win of the competition.

With qualification already off the table, pride was all that remained. Nevertheless, Roma started with purpose and intensity. They took command early and rarely relented.

The breakthrough arrived in the 19th minute. Babajide punished a slack defensive pass and fed Alayah Pilgrim, who calmly converted from close range. Thirteen minutes later, another error at the back gifted Evelyne Viens an opportunity. Her initial effort was blocked, but a fortunate deflection allowed her follow-up to cross the line.

After the break, Viens added two more to complete her hat-trick. First, she produced a tidy poked finish after a perfectly weighted, first-time Giuliano through ball on 60 minutes. Then, she struck again with a sharp turn and finish in the box following yet another St. Pölten mix-up.

Roma continued to pour forward. Giulia Dragoni made it five with a rocket into the top corner after some neat footwork. Shortly after, Alice Corelli delivered the night’s standout moment, driving in from distance on 83 minutes. Isabel Aistleitner’s late reply for the Austrians proved scant consolation.

Ultimately, Roma depart the competition but with some pride still intact.

UWCL 25/26 Benfica 1-1 PSG scoreboard

Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain ended their disappointing UEFA Women’s Champions League campaigns with a 1–1 draw in Lisbon. Despite strong domestic form, both sides finished their European journeys without a win.

PSG opened the scoring inside five minutes. Jennifer Echegini found space on the edge of the area and drilled a low, left-footed strike beyond the keeper to give the visitors an early advantage. Both teams created chances thereafter. However, a lack of quality in the final third meant the score remained 1–0.

Benfica’s persistence finally paid off just after the half-hour. Catarina Sousa Alves was brought down by Elisa De Almeida inside the box, and Carole Costa stepped up to send Katarzyna Kiedrzynek the wrong way and level the score.

In the second half, both sides pushed for a winner. Nevertheless, neither could find a decisive breakthrough as the game drifted towards a draw.

As a result, PSG finish 17th and Benfica 16th, separated only by goal difference. Both depart the competition with just two points to their name.

UWCL 25/26 Bayern Munich 3-0 Valerenga scoreboard

Bayern München wrapped up their group campaign in style with a commanding 3–0 victory over Vålerenga, securing a top-four finish and direct passage to the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals.

The hosts wasted no time asserting their dominance and took the lead inside 90 seconds. Franziska Kett’s low cut-back from the right found Momoko Tanikawa arriving late, and the Japanese midfielder finished first-time from the edge of the box. Just nine minutes later, it was 2–0. Former Vålerenga defender Stine Ballisager picked the ball up inside her own half, drove forward, and unleashed a powerful strike into the bottom corner to punish her former side.

From there, Bayern’s high press and possession control suffocated Vålerenga. As a result, the margin could have grown further when a VAR check awarded a penalty. Georgia Stanway stepped up, but Vålerenga goalkeeper Jalen Enblom dived full-stretch to deny her and keep the scoreline respectable.

However, that resistance lasted only until the 58th minute. Klara Bühl delivered an inch-perfect cross, and Pernille Harder headed home Bayern’s third.

Despite their Matchday 1 thumping by Barcelona, Bayern progress to the last eight high on confidence. They edge out Arsenal for the final automatic qualification spot and now look every bit like genuine contenders.

UWCL 25/26 FC Twente 1-1 Real Madrid scoreboard

FC Twente came within seconds of a landmark UEFA Women’s Champions League victory, only to be denied by a 95th-minute equaliser from Real Madrid’s Sara Däbritz in a dramatic 1–1 draw. Twente were already out and looked to end their campaign on a high. Meanwhile, Madrid needed all three points to leapfrog Bayern into the top four and secure automatic quarter-final qualification.

Madrid started brightly and had the ball in the net inside two minutes. However, Däbritz’s close-range finish was ruled out for offside. The first half remained finely balanced. Sophie Proost rattled the crossbar for Twente, while Misa produced two excellent saves to keep the visitors level.

Just 20 seconds into the second half, Twente struck. Alieke Tuin delivered an inch-perfect cross from the right, which Jaimy Ravensbergen met superbly, rising well to head the hosts into a deserved lead.

As the clock ticked down, Madrid piled on the pressure. Nevertheless, Twente’s defence held firm until stoppage time, when a deflected effort from Däbritz wrong-footed Diede Lemey and cruelly denied the Dutch side a first-ever UWCL group-stage win.

As a result, Real Madrid advance to the knockout play-offs but fall short of the top four. Twente, meanwhile, exit frustrated that they could not hang on for a famous victory.

UWCL 25/26 Juventus 0-1 Man united scoreboard

Manchester United ended their league phase campaign with a disciplined 1–0 win over Juventus in Turin – a result that confirmed both sides’ progression to the knockout play-offs as seeded teams.

The decisive moment came in the 18th minute. Jess Park curled a beautiful effort into the top corner to put United ahead. Park was at the heart of United’s best play throughout, with the visitors looking continually threatening on the break.

Melvine Malard nearly doubled the lead in the 24th minute with a fierce long-range effort, only to be denied by a superb fingertip save from Pauline Peyraud-Magnin.

After the interval, Juventus responded with greater urgency. They applied sustained pressure and tested United’s resolve, but the visitors’ back line – led by Le Tissier – remained solid.

Late drama arrived in the 85th minute when Elisabeth Terland was brought down by Cecilia Salvai inside the area. However, United’s penalty claims were waved away, with no VAR intervention forthcoming. Bizarre decision.

Despite the result, both clubs advance as seeded teams. United, in particular, are buoyed by a strong finish on European soil.

UWCL 25/26 Lyon 4-0 Atletico Madrid scoreboard

Olympique Lyonnais rounded off their UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase in emphatic fashion, dispatching Atlético Madrid 4–0 to underline their status as one of the tournament favourites.

The breakthrough arrived on the half-hour mark. Bøe Risa inadvertently turned Kadidiatou Diani’s low cross into her own net at the near post. Just six minutes later, Atlético’s evening worsened further when Luany was shown a straight red card for pulling Selma Bacha’s hair.

After the break, Lyon continued to dominate and were awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute after Carmen Menayo was penalised for handball. Wendie Renard calmly converted from the spot to make it two. Within sixty seconds, Diani added a third, capping off a slick move with a deft finish. The night’s standout strike followed in the 71st minute, as Borbala Bíró Schrader unleashed a thunderous effort from range to complete a four-goal triumph.

Lyon finish the group unbeaten, their only dropped points coming in a 3–3 draw away to Juventus. Atlético progress to the play-offs but have work to do after a mixed campaign of two wins, one draw, and three defeats.

UWCL 25/26 OH Leuven 0-3 Arsenal scoreboard

Arsenal ended their UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase with a dominant 3–0 win away to OH Leuven, but it was not enough to secure automatic qualification. The reigning champions needed a win and a Bayern slip-up to progress directly. However, despite their confident display, they must now navigate the play-off round.

From the outset, Arsenal were in complete control. The opener arrived in the 18th minute when Olivia Smith’s initial effort was saved, but the Canadian reacted quickest to slot home the rebound – her first Champions League goal for the club. Just nine minutes later, Beth Mead doubled the lead, cutting in from the right and bending a trademark left-footed finish past Seynhaeve.

After the break, the pressure did not relent. Arsenal sealed the result on 68 minutes when Caitlin Foord’s dangerous cross forced Leuven defender Saar Janssen to turn the ball into her own net under pressure.

Despite the scoreline, Arsenal could have won by more. Leuven goalkeeper Lowiese Seynhaeve produced a series of key saves to keep the margin respectable.

Arsenal finish fifth and will be seeded in the play-off draw. Leuven, meanwhile, also advance on debut – a remarkable achievement in their maiden campaign.

UWCL 25/26 Paris FC 0-2 Barcelona scoreboard

Barcelona concluded their dominant UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase with a comfortable 2–0 win over Paris FC, sealing top spot and an unbeaten group campaign. Already assured of qualification, the reigning finalists delivered a composed, controlled display in the French capital.

The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute, finished with typical Barcelona precision. Vicky López applied the final touch inside the area after a slick passing move, calmly slotting home to give the visitors the lead. Paris FC responded not long after Maelle Garbino’s thumping effort cannoning off the post — the closest the hosts came all night.

Barça didn’t let up after the break. Within four minutes of the restart, Caroline Graham Hansen doubled the advantage, collecting a loose ball on the edge of the box and driving in a low finish past Chiamaka Nnadozie to make it 2–0. Barcelona maintained pressure throughout the second half, but Paris held firm to avoid further damage.

The result confirms Barcelona as group winners and quarter-finalists, unbeaten with five wins and a draw. Paris FC, meanwhile, advance to the play-off round – despite an inconsistent campaign.

UWCL 25/26 Wolfsburg 1-2 Chelsea scoreboard

Chelsea came from behind to secure a vital 2–1 victory over Wolfsburg in Germany, confirming their place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals. Wolfsburg, who still had a mathematical chance of a top-four finish, now slip into the unseeded play-off places – a dangerous opponent for any seeded side come February.

The hosts struck first in the 16th minute. Chelsea’s attempted clearance was intercepted on the edge of the area, and Alexandra Popp made no mistake, rifling a half-volley past Livia Peng to give the two-time champions a deserved lead.

Chelsea struggled to find their rhythm in the opening stages but struck back just before the interval. Against the run of play, Lucy Bronze rose highest to meet a well-delivered corner and glanced a header into the far corner to level the score in first-half stoppage time.

After the break, the game remained open, with both sides carving out chances. However, the decisive moment arrived in the 64th minute. Sam Kerr timed her run to perfection, meeting Johanna Rytiting Kaneryd’s floated cross with a powerful header into the top corner to complete the turnaround.

The result seals an unbeaten group stage and a third-place finish for Chelsea. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, drop to ninth — their lowest position in this season’s UWCL at the moment it mattered most. Ouch.
