In the 2026 UK New Year Honours, seven figures from the Lionesses’ historic era received recognition. Together, they represent one of the most significant collective acknowledgements of women’s football in British history.
Sarina Wiegman receives honorary damehood
At the top of the list is Sarina Wiegman, awarded an honorary damehood. Since arriving in England in 2021, she has reshaped the national side – instilling belief, consistency and elite standards across every layer of the programme. A European title in 2022, a World Cup final in 2023, and a second European crown in 2025 have cemented her status as one of the most influential coaches of the modern era. (The honour is honorary as Wiegman is not a UK citizen.)

Five Lionesses awarded honours
England captain Leah Williamson is appointed CBE, recognising not only her authority on the pitch but her role as the public face of a generation – articulate, composed and unapologetically ambitious for women’s sport.
Four key players from England’s golden era – Alex Greenwood, Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway andElla Toone – are awarded MBEs, recognising sustained excellence at club and international level during a period that transformed visibility, expectation and commercial value in the women’s game.
Honouring the team behind the team
The list also recognises those working behind the scenes. Long-serving team doctor Ritan Mehta receives an MBE for her contribution to player welfare across multiple tournaments. Her award underlines that elite performance depends on far more than those in the spotlight.
The honours will be formally presented throughout 2026 – typically at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude for this honour. When I first arrived in England, I could never have imagined the respect and warmth I’ve experienced from the English people. I deeply thank the fans for their support.”

The very best of Britain
Prime Minister Keir Starmer described this year’s recipients as “the very best of Britain – people who put the common good ahead of themselves to strengthen communities and change lives.” He added that their dedication reflects “the decent, compassionate country we are proud to be.”
