The Netherlands delivered a commanding start to their UEFA Women’s Euros 2025 campaign, beating debutants Wales 3‑0 in Lucerne on Saturday, claiming early leadership of Group D. In front of a supportive crowd at Allmend Stadion, the Dutch dominated registering 67% possession, and 7 shots on goal to Wales’ 0.
The match was balanced early in the opening half with Wales defending resolutely. Just as the half was closing, Vivianne Miedema broke the deadlock in stoppage time (45+3’), curling in her 100th international goal — a milestone strike that finally pierced the Welsh resistance.
Netherland’s control became clearer after the break. Within minutes of the restart (48’), Victoria Pelova doubled the lead, finishing calmly from Daniëlle van de Donk’s cross. Then, at 57 minutes, Esmée Brugts sealed the win with a composed volley from a Pelova delivery, confirming a 3‑0 scoreline, and a job well done.
For Wales, the debut was a mix of pride and harsh lessons: they will have to up their performances to avoid being the whipping boys (or girls) of the group.
