Norway pulled off a dramatic 2-1 comeback against host nation Switzerland in Basel on Wednesday evening, claiming a strong start to Group A at the UEFA Women’s Euros 2025. In front of more than 34,000 passionate home fans at St. Jakob-Park, Switzerland soared early, but Norway’s experience shone through as they turned the match on its head.
Switzerland dominated the first half, creating clear chances and pushing the visitors into their own half. Their reward arrived in the 28th minute when Nadine Riesen took advantage of a loose ball in the box, firing into the roof of the net to send the crowd into raptures. Switzerland’s early control was evident both in their attacking momentum and chances capped off by Reuteler hitting the bar minutes earlier.
Yet Norway responded swiftly after the break. In the 54th minute, captain Ada Hegerberg, unleashed her 50th goal for Norway, powering home a header from a precise corner to silence the home stands. Just four minutes later, Switzerland’s Julia Stierli diverted Caroline Graham Hansen’s cross into her own net under pressure, flipping the scoreline to 2–1.
The remainder was tense. Switzerland pushed hard, winning a penalty — only for it to be overturned by VAR — while Norway’s goalkeeper Cecilie Fiskerstrand and defence held firm as hosts piled on late pressure.
Norway’s victory, their third successive one-goal win over Switzerland this year, sets them atop Group A and reaffirms their tournament experience despite early nerves. A resilient display underlines their credentials. Switzerland, meanwhile, will reflect on what could have been after dominating early but falling short — the first time a host nation has lost their Euros opener.
