Sweden edged past Denmark 1‑0 in their Group C opener at Stade de Genève on Friday, with a tight but assured performance. In scorching early-July heat and in front of over 17,000 fans, Sweden’s midfield control and a moment of precision proved decisive in this Nordic clash.
The opening 50 minutes were evenly contested, with Sweden enjoying slightly more possession and Denmark defending resolutely. A powerful free-kick from Filippa Angeldahl forced a sharp save from Denmark’s Maja Bay in the first half, and both sides experienced cooling breaks under the blistering 30 °C conditions.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 55th minute after a slick one-two between Angeldahl and veteran Kosovare Asllani. Angeldahl found space just outside the box and curled a right-footed shot into the bottom corner — a beautifully timed strike that grabbed the game’s only goal.
Denmark responded with urgency, earning a series of set-piece opportunities and putting Swedish keeper Jennifer Falk under pressure. Denmark’s captain, Pernille Harder, came close in the 81st minute, smashing a low drive against the crossbar. Despite those efforts, Sweden’s defence — marshalled by Nathalie Björn and Linda Sembrant — stood firm.
Sweden’s win extends their unbeaten run into 2025 and gives them an early edge in Group C. Angeldahl’s goal continues her rich vein of form — already her third consecutive goal in matches against Nordic rivals. Denmark, meanwhile, showed plenty of fight despite the loss, with their defensive display belying a tough match under the coach’s final tournament.
