Spain’s Group B opener at the Stadion Wankdorf began under the sombre hush of a minute’s silence for the late Diogo Jota and his brother — a poignant start before the reigning world champions imposed their authority in brutal style.
Despite two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí only making a nine-minute cameo (carefully eased back after minor illness), Montse Tomé’s side delivered a masterclass of pressing, possession, and clinical finishing that all but ended the contest by half-time.
In the 2nd minute, Esther González poached the opener, Vicky López’s doubled the lead in the 7th, before Putella (41) and Gonzalez (43) put the game to bed. Cristina Martín‑Prieto headed home to seal a 5-0 rout in stoppage time, justifying Spain as favourites for the tournament.
Spain finished with 76% possession, allowed just one shot on target, and toyed with Portugal’s shape all night. Their high midfield pressing and composure on the pulled had Portugal chasing shadows for most of the night.
For Portugal, it’s back to the drawing board. They’ll need a seismic lift to have any shot of emerging from this group, with Italy looming on Monday.
