Spain lived up to their billing as world champions on Monday, delivering a commanding 6‑2 win over Belgium at Thun to move to six points and seal their place in the UEFA Women’s Euros 2025 quarter-finals. In a rain‑tossed evening, Montse Tomé’s side were exquisite at times, showing their attacking depth and clinical edge, sending a strong message to rivals as they chase another continental crown.
After a quiet start (by Spain’s standard), Spain opened the floodgates in the 22nd minute. Alexia Putellas, finding her rhythm early on, netted with a crisp finish after Vicky López’s clever build-up. Belgium hit back swiftly through Justine Vanhaevermaet’s header in the 24th, converting a Tessa Wullaert corner to level the scores.
Spain regained control just before half-time when captain Irene Paredes soared to nod in from a Clàudia Pina assist in the 39th minute, restoring their lead.
Belgium refused to lie down, and early in the second half Hannah Eurlings struck to equalise in the 50th, again from a well-worked set-piece. Yet Spain responded in almost the same breath: Esther González found the net in the 52nd to make it 3‑2, and Mariona Caldentey added a fourth in the 61st following sustained pressure.
As Belgium tired, Spain’s attacking wave continued: Putellas struck again in the 81st, her second of the night, before Clàudia Pina’s stunning long-range finish in the 86th made it 6‑2 — their highest margin of victory so far.
With 11 goals across two games, Spain are the tournament’s leading scorers and firmly in control of Group B . Meanwhile, Belgium — now with two losses — are out.
