Group C: Poland stun Denmark 3-2 in historic first major tournament win

Poland claimed a memorable 3-2 victory over Denmark on July 12 in Lucerne, scoring their first-ever goals and win at a major tournament. With both teams already out of contention, pride was the prize — and Poland the 27th ranked team, celebrated a milestone moment.

At Allmend Stadion, a buoyant Polish support created a festival atmosphere, savouring every moment even as Denmark sought to leave with a final flourish.

Poland broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when Natalia Padilla-Bidas tapped in from close range after her initial shot was saved. This marked Poland’s first goal in a Women’s Euros finals

Just eight minutes later, captain Ewa Pajor of Barcelona nodded in from a Padilla-Bidas cross to make it 2-0 and double the celebrations.

Denmark fought back through Janni Thomsen in the 59th minute, whose fierce drive slipped past the goalkeeper to reduce the gap to 2-1.

Poland restored their two-goal cushion in the 76th minute when substitute Martyna Wiankowska curled a strike off the bar and in.

Denmark responded late via Signe Bruun in the 83rd minute, heading home from a well-delivered corner to set up a tense finale.

Poland held firm in the final minutes to seal a historic win and bring their exit to a triumphant close.

Poland return home with their heads held high. Expect the FA to leverage this landmark result for greater investment in their women’s programme. Denmark, Euro 2017 runner-ups, now prepare to rebuild under incoming leadership.
