England delivered their second sparkling performance in four days at the UEFA Women’s Euros 2025, dismantling Wales 6-1 in St. Gallen to seal a place in the quarter-finals and remind everyone why they are still genuine contenders, even after that opening loss to France.
Sarina Wiegman’s side knew a win was essential to stay ahead of the Netherlands on goal difference, and they wasted no time in taking control. England opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Georgia Stanway coolly slotted home from the penalty spot after VAR overturned an initial free-kick decision, ruling the foul had actually occurred inside the box. Watching replays, it was hard to see why a foul was given at all, but England made the most of it.
Just eight minutes later, Ella Toone — who finished with two goals and two assists — capitalised on a defensive lapse to double the lead. By the half-hour mark it was three, with Lauren Hemp rising to meet Toone’s pinpoint cross and glance a header into the far corner. As Wales struggled to regroup, England struck again. Alessia Russo tapped in on the stroke of half-time after slick interplay down the right, sending the Lionesses into the break 4-0 up.
In the 72nd minute, Beth Mead added a fifth, showing trademark composure to finish in a crowded box. Wales managed a moment of their own four minutes later when Hannah Cain ran onto Jess Fishlock’s clever through ball and rifled past Hannah Hampton. England, though, had the final word. In the 89th minute, Aggie Beever-Jones capped off the night by heading in from Mead’s superb cross.
